I've watched the odd US football game, but last night's one between Ohio State and Tennessee had an interesting first half. Ryan Day, Ohio State's coach, said, "You could tell from the jump they had a look in their eye that they were going to win this game."

Followed by, "We did a hell of a job not letting off the gas," said Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard. Therein lies the lesson for the rest of us.

Roll Up Your Sleeves

If you want to ace 2025, roll up your sleeves and make your goals a reality.

It requires being proactive in learning and seeking new skills, and you can do this by jumping onto the playing field instead of watching from the sidelines. The playing field is a fun place to be because that's where the action is. Try picking projects and causes that help you stretch and grow regularly, not just once in a while.

If you're not in a position to do so, then get that learning outside through different volunteering projects or set up a commercial hobby so you can fine-tune your skills in a practical way. Not only will you learn while doing it, but you'll also upskill regularly. An added benefit is that it's an attractive quality admired by employers.

Learning Comes in Many Forms

Gone are the days when the classroom provided the majority of learning. That's not the case anymore because learning is everywhere, online, offline, on-site, offsite. It just depends on you and your preferred learning style.

Update your knowledge. Read and find out what's going on in your industry. Know the challenges your business/industry faces today and tomorrow. Be informed so you remain competitively positioned.

Talk to colleagues and management. You'll be surprised by how much knowledge they possess, too. If that doesn't tick the box, there are plenty of vocational courses you could do to complement your knowledge toolbox.

Remember, you have more choices than you think you do. When you take charge of your learning, your powerhouse will help you face tomorrow with greater confidence.

Positive Self Talk

Start by saying nice things to yourself, and watch how your self-talk transforms from being on autopilot to working well for you. Talk to yourself like you would talk to a good friend who needs support.

Your Inner Circle

Choose friends who lift you and make you feel good about yourself. Spend time with people who believe in you and want to see you succeed.

Your Goals

Write down clear and specific goals that matter to you. Break these goals into small, achievable steps you can work on daily.

Attitude Towards Challenges

See challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, not problems that defeat you. Ask yourself what you can learn from the experience when something challenging happens.

Habits

Build daily habits that make you feel strong and confident. Start small, like making your bed or doing ten minutes of exercise, and slowly add more good habits.

Learning

Never stop learning new things that interest you. Take classes, watch tutorials, read books, or learn skills that make you feel excited and capable.

Growth Mindset

Believe that you can improve and get better at anything with practice. Don't let past failures stop you from trying again and believing in your ability to change.

Doing Fun Things

Make time for activities that bring you joy and make you feel alive. Do things that make you laugh, feel excited, or help you relax and feel good about yourself.

Saying No Often

Learn to say no to things that drain your energy or make you feel bad. Protect your time and emotional space by choosing what truly matters to you.

Creating Healthy Boundaries

Set clear limits with people about how you want to be treated. Respect yourself enough to walk away from situations or relationships that don't respect your worth.

Parting Comments

There are certainly times when it's appropriate to sit on the sidelines, such as if you're not feeling well or if you're not interested in a particular activity. However, to thrive in 2025, it pays to participate in life actively and not just observe from the sidelines.

Being involved and engaged can help you grow and learn, as well as contribute to the success of a group or project.

Above all, turn your projects, goals and learning into fun, and you'll be motivated to shift gears when it matters.
