Welcome to my series of articles to explain in detail all the principles of ultralearning proposed by Scott Young!

Recently, I shared with you how anyone can learn any topic with the power of ultralearning.

Ultra what?!

Ultralearning!

Think about it as a learning approach characterized by intense focus, self-directed, and rapid skill acquisition.

In his Book called Ultralearning, Scott proposed 9 principles to master any topic you want.

So let's begin with this series of articles with principle number 1: Meta-Learning.

Learn step by step how to apply it!

🤓 Pd: I will write an article summarizing each of these 9 principles, so follow me, subscribe and stay tuned!

Step 1. Learn How to Learn

Meta-learning doesn't mean learning your target (a language, programming, etc.).

It is about learning how knowledge is structured.

In other words, it is about learning how to learn.

Think about meta-learning as a map, showing you how to learn the topic you want without getting lost in the middle.

To visualize this, ask yourself:

How would I learn a new language?

You need a plan for that! You need a map. That's meta-learning!

Learning how to learn a new language.

Think about this as a recipe.

To cook something new, you need to get the right ingredients, follow a step-by-step procedure, and learn things that you need to cook your target if necessary.

You got it? Great!

Let's move on to how you can build up your meta-learning.

Step 2. Ask Why, How, and What

To craft your roadmap to master any topic, ask yourself 3 questions:

  1. WHY should I learn this?
  2. WHAT I will learn?
  3. HOW will I learn it?
  • WHY refers to the motivation that one topic generates for you.

For example, I love programming, neuroscience, and animal cognition. I learn about these topics because they are my biggest passions and I can also get good money with them.

  • WHAT stands for all the knowledge and skills you'll need to learn to be successful in your ultra-learning journey.
  • HOW refers to the resources and methods you'll use when learning.

Let's take Data Analysis as an example.

WHY data analysis?

Because I was always interested in programming and data. Additionally, I can make good money with it.

WHAT you will learn from studying data analysis?

To be a data analyst, I will need to learn Excel, SQL, Tableau or PowerBI, and Python.

HOW I will learn Data analysis?

By taking free online courses, taking tests, and coding original projects.

See?

This is how you can structure your ultralearning project by answering 3 simple questions.

Now it's your turn to apply it to the topic you want :)

Step 3. Don't Waste Too Much Time

Don't research for hours about how you can learn a topic, make it easy.

When I was an undergraduate student wanting to start learning programming, I didn't spend hours on the internet figuring out how I could learn it.

I just asked other people that was in the same situation.

They told me their recommendations and how they would learn if they could start again.

With this information, I could make a roadmap way faster, also considering my background in Psychology (my math skills were pretty bad).

👉 My tip is that you ask other people how to learn something or read articles about people who faced the same situation.

Conclusion

Ultralearning is fascinating!

But please keep in mind that ultra-learning doesn't mean studying for hours ferocity.

It is about enjoying learning a new topic at your own pace.

Now you know how to structure your project.

Welcome to the club, ultralearner!

In the next article from this series, I will tell you how to focus while ultra-learning.

See you!
