Controversial aspect repealed

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has revoked the city's implementation of an antisemitism definition that includes some forms of Israel criticism. A sweeping rejection of his predecessor's executive orders. What Mamdani has done is to go to the heart of the misinterpretation of what constitutes antisemitism. The revocation covers his predecessor Eric Adams's implementation of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, which says that some forms of Israel criticism are antisemitic.

The interpretation of what is and is not anti semitic has become a firestorm around the world. The phrase has become increasingly contentious in light of the Israeli actions in Gaza.

As global concerns about the genocide in Gaza have become daily news and conversation, the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has denied that there exist a genocide against the Palestinians in their own territory. This has become a routine denial by virtually all Israeli leaders in spite of the deaths of over 70,000 citizens and the flattening of Gaza by carpet bombing.

In turn some but notably not all Jews have echoed the same refrain — "there is no genocide." It is notable that the standard life by the Israeli government has been to deny apartheid that has occured against Gaza for decades.

It should be noted that there is a significant contingency of Israelis and Jews around the world that have been quick to condemn the genocide along with much of the rest of the world.

At issue has become if it is fair to condemn Israeli actions, or government policy or if doing amounts to Jew hate or anti Judaism. While Israel is not entirely Jewish, and it claims to be a democracy, the bulk of the government is Jewish. It is also, however presently run by a government that is weighted with hard right-wing Zionists. There extreme policies have created the dynamice that have put Israel and Palestanians at odds with each other. Zionists want the land that is currently Palestanian and have been bold enough for the history of Israel and even prior to becoming a state to violently opposing the Palestanian population and have removed then from their homes. Even today, the Israeli government has been attempting to diminish the palestanian population and illegally settle West Bank territory. Zionists have use brutal means to kill or force Palestinians, both Muslim and Christian communities living peacefully together in the West Bank, off their own land.

The fact that many Jews have seen this for what it is and objected to the actions and policy of their government should indicate that such opposition from others is not directed at Jews in general, but at the government that clothes itself conveniently in Judaism. As such, when Israeli actions or policy is exposed and opposed, Netanyahu cries antisemitism.

This is how the term antisemitism has become muddled in controversy. It is hard on the suffice to justify how anyone can be anti semitic. To hate Jews, or any group based in race, ethnicity, or religion is wrong. But to object to, oppose, call out apartheid and or genocide is another thing altogether. Just as hating Jews is morally objectionable, it would be morally objectionable to let genocide go recognized and not condemed would be morally objectionable as well.

IHRA DEFINITION

The IHRA defination has been used by a range of national and local governments worldwide as well as some institutions . It has also been a source of contentions because some say that it chills some criticism of Israel that would be legitimate political speech. NEW YORK — In one of his first acts in office on Thursday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani revoked the city's implementation of an antisemitism definition that includes some forms of Israel criticism, in a sweeping rejection of his predecessor's executive orders.

The mass revocation of those executive orders also canceled other pro-Israel measures taken by the former mayor, Eric Adams.

Mamdani, a far-left anti-Zionist, took office with the start of the new year, replacing Adams's staunchly pro-Israel administration.

Mamdani has condemned classic expressions of antisemitism, like swastika graffiti and comments like stereotypical references to Jewish greed, while defending or espousing anti-Zionist rhetoric that many Jews might consider discriminatory.

Mamdani said, "We must distinguish between antisemitism and criticism of the Israeli government, and the ADL's report oftentimes ignores this distinction, and in doing so, it draws attention away from the very real crisis of antisemitism."

The issue of Boycotts by organizations and universities is an issue that needs to be dealt with in the context of political speech. People must be able to exercise economic boycotts against Israel on the basis of their own political policies.

Antisemitism is real. It is wrong, and should be called out. Genocide is no less real than antisemitism and deserves to be called out as well.
